Swami’s
More than just a good place to surf.

                             Surfing

The most usual reason for someone coming to Swami’s is related to Surfing.  It’s either to Surf, watch others surfing, check out the surf, or swap surfing stories and wait for surfable conditions.

Swami’s is well know in the surfing world as a premier winter break.  It can handle any size swell Mother Nature provides.  If the other breaks in San Diego are closing out, Swami’s can still hold shape and size and provide whoever is willing to ride the biggest swells an exhilarating ride.  On the best days it peels right nearly a quarter mile over its rock reef bottom – and the left, as well, can often be quite fun and a good alternative on crowded days.

When the sell is 4’ or bigger from either the West or the North, Swami’s will be breaking in true form as a well-shaped right that can have a nice vertical take-off followed by a long down-the-line wall with occasional tube sections.  When the tide is low and the swell is up, the wave will have some hollow sections, which allow for some good tube riding.  Many good surfers ride this wave so it is often crowded.  The caliber of surfing performance at such times can be very good – and exciting to watch.

Swami’s is best during those Fall and Winter swells from the North and West, but it can break during the summer on very strong South swells.  It must be at least 6’ South with some West to break at Swami’s.

There will still be rideable waves when the swell is not strong.  The surfers who ride longboards will then be out in force riding the small peelers with classic style.  During these smaller days the novices will also be out getting some fun waves and improving their surfing skills.

Swami’s is a great wave.  When it’s on, it challenges the best surfers to perform their best – and on small days it provides fun, little peelers for anyone to enjoy.
