The Park As you enter Swami’s Park on the south Encinitas bluff, you may – in your eagerness to see the surf, miss the Park’s landscape with its stately Torrey Pines and Palms. You can usually judge whether the surf is good or not by the parking spaces available. (On weekends and during vacation periods there won’t be many regardless of the surf’s condition.) You will likely give little notice to the Sumacs, the Natal Plums, and the Juniper in the planting beds and around the light posts. The hardest to ignore is the gnarled old wind shaped Torrey Pine that guards the rest rooms. Other Torrey Pines as well as palms give shade and comfort to those relaxing on picnicking in the grassy area. The Torrey Pine is native only to the coastal region around Torrey Pines Sate Park and to Santa Rosa Island, one of the Channel Islands. Long-time locals still refer to this area as “The Point” or “Noonan’s Point” after a past owner/resident.
